Corris Mine Explorers

Corris Mine Explorers is open all year and starts from the Corris Craft Centre. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the virtually untouched, abandoned workings of an old Welsh Slate Mine with one of Wales’ top Mine Explorers.

The trips start with the equipment, proper mining gear including a hard hat, cap lamp, safety clips and a battery pack. Equipped and ready, you enter the mine; it’s dark and damp and you explore the route of entry hand dug by Victorian miners, with just the shallow light from your cap lamp.

As your eyes adjust to the darkness and you explore deeper into this virtual time capsule, you’ll discover old mining relics: tools, machinery, candles, cigarette packets and much more – discarded and forgotten since the day the Braich Goch slate mine closed in the early 1970s.

During these underground trips, authentic stories of working life in the mine are told in such a way that you can almost feel the mine creaking back to life.

There are three trips to choose from, a Taster Trip, a 2 hour Mine Explorer trip and a Half Day Mine Expedition. Due to the nature of the trips, advance booking is highly recommended.
